How to Wash & Care for Embroidered Clothing
Share
You invested in a beautifully embroidered piece — a custom hoodie, a monogrammed tote, or a personalized hat. Now the question is: how do you keep it looking as sharp as the day it arrived? Embroidery is durable, but it does require a little extra care to preserve the thread integrity and keep colors vibrant for years to come.
1. Turn It Inside Out Before Washing
This is the single most important step. Turning your garment inside out protects the embroidered threads from friction against other items in the wash. It also shields the design from direct agitation, which can cause thread pulls or pilling over time.
2. Use Cold Water — Always
Hot water is the enemy of embroidery. High temperatures can cause thread colors to bleed, shrink the stabilizer backing, and weaken the stitching. Stick to cold water (30°C / 86°F or below) for every wash cycle.
3. Choose a Gentle or Delicate Cycle
High-speed spin cycles create unnecessary stress on embroidered designs. Select the gentle or delicate cycle on your washing machine to minimize agitation. For especially precious pieces — like a custom gift or a one-of-a-kind event piece — hand washing is always the safest option.
4. Use a Mild Detergent
Harsh detergents with bleach or optical brighteners can fade thread colors and degrade the fabric beneath the embroidery. Opt for a gentle, color-safe detergent. Avoid fabric softeners on embroidered areas — they can leave residue that dulls the sheen of metallic or satin threads.
5. Skip the Dryer When Possible
Heat from the dryer can cause embroidery backing to warp and threads to contract unevenly. Air drying flat or on a hanger is the gold standard. If you must use a dryer, select the lowest heat setting and remove the garment while it's still slightly damp.
6. Iron with Caution
Never iron directly over embroidery — the heat and pressure can flatten the stitches and damage the texture that makes embroidery so distinctive. If your garment needs pressing, turn it inside out and iron on the reverse side, or use a pressing cloth as a barrier.
7. Store Properly
Fold embroidered garments with the design facing outward, or hang them to prevent creasing across the stitching. Avoid storing in plastic bags for long periods — breathable cotton garment bags are ideal for keeping pieces fresh without trapping moisture.
Caring for Embroidered Hats & Accessories
Structured hats should never go in the washing machine. Spot clean with a damp cloth and mild soap, working gently around the embroidered area. For bags and accessories, follow the same cold-water, gentle-detergent principles — and always air dry.
The Bottom Line
Embroidery is built to last — and with the right care routine, your custom pieces from Sassy Stitch will stay vibrant and sharp through years of wear. Whether it's a custom embroidered hoodie, a personalized hat, or a monogrammed gift, a little extra care goes a long way.
